WHAT IS A: STATE SENATOR

The Wyoming House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the Wyoming State Legislature. Alongside the Wyoming State Senate, it forms the legislative branch of the Wyoming state government and works alongside the Governor to create laws and establish a state budget.

State representatives introduce and vote on bills that represent the interests of their constituents (people who live in their voting district). They create new laws, modify or update old laws and serve on research committees within the legislative branch. These representatives uphold the Wyoming State Constitution, and vote on changes to the Constitution when amendments are needed. They may address issues such as education, transportation, commerce, state taxes and any other items that are a concern to local residents. Representatives may also assist constituents with personal legal issues such as immigration or justice problems.

Legislative authority and responsibilities of Wyoming House Representatives include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes. There are 60 state house districts in Wyoming. Wyoming State Representatives serve two-year terms. There are no term limits for this office.

WHAT IS A: STATE REPRESENTATIVE

The Wyoming Senate is the higher chamber of the Wyoming State Legislature. Alongside the Wyoming State House of Representatives, it forms the legislative branch of the Wyoming state government and works alongside the Governor to create laws and establish a state budget. Wyoming state senators are responsible for representing the constituents of their district in the state senate. For this purpose, the state senator and their staff might poll constituents about their opinions and read the emails and letters expressing their opinions that constituents write and send to the state senator. This feedback from voters should help formulate their priorities, gives them ideas for legislation to propose in the state senate, and influences how they should vote on others’ proposed legislation. State senators are also expected to not just listen to their constituents, but also to attend to, inform, and help constituents. Legislative authority and responsibilities of Wyoming state senators include passing bills on public policy matters, setting levels for state spending, raising and lowering taxes, and voting to uphold or override gubernatorial vetoes.

There are 30 state senate districts in Wyoming. Wyoming state senators serve four-year terms. There are no term limits for this office.
